Unpae is a nonprofit organisation that operates in the field of contemporary visual culture. Born primarily as a Residency program, now is a platform for artists, curators, designers and researchers of all kinds who come together to explore and develop new forms of fluid practices, inside of a frame where freedom to be and to make is encouraged, and where emotional bonds between people are built. During the years of activity a special sensibility for Performative acts, multimedia production and editorial practices has spontaneously sprung. Unpae is directed by Andrea Croce (founder); Alessia Delli Rocioli and Michele Sablone.
On occasion of the 30th anniversary of its foundation, the University of Art and Design of Karlsruhe (DE) organized a festival featuring films by the students from the department of Media Art. As it was the first school’s festival organized since the covid restrictions were fully lifted, they wanted to embrace the sense of excitement in celebrating together in the open air as well as enjoying the summer season. The final design features bouncy bright green lines that evoke images of clouds or maybe some birds’ flight patterns, which in contrast with the grey from the background and the bubbly typography also reflect the experimentalism of the students’ films themselves.
Over the summer of 2022 I designed a display typeface inspired by the turn-of-the-millennium futuristic aesthetic with the idea of capturing the sense of velocity and optimism echoing in most pieces of media in a brief period of time sometime in the early 2000’s, before the downfall. Developed in Katharina Köhler’s class “The Habitat of a Typeface Today” at HfG Karlsruhe (DE), the typeface embraces features from the world of technology and space science fiction, such as squared, wide and slanted shapes and exaggerated ascenders and descenders. The title “Hypersonic” describes the current fastest speed reachable – exceeding five times the speed of sound – and aims to interpret the current very much real and fast-approaching developments in AI and space travel, with the picturesque imagery of the future from a near past. Hypersonic was exhibited in 2022’s Rundgang and was presented in a collective digital and interactive website-specimen, featuring a lonely spaceship traveling in deep space forever.
The project aims to involve young people in the 18-30 age bracket, collect their "voice" and together develop concrete ideas and proposals for building the future city in which to live. The cycle of meetings of GiovaInfe 2023, is entitled Provincial, an invitation to collect a series of internal points of view on the themes of provincialism and a-metropolitan living. The project reflects on the concept of 'provincial', a commonly used term with an often derogatory value, and invites us in an ironic and creative way to re-discuss the terms in which marginality and provincialism can on the contrary be resources for what we could call 'a visionary limitation': to give value to the province by raising awareness among its young people and stimulating a new self-determination, finding alternative resources and opportunities to the contemporary urbanisation of large population centres. Fondazione Zimei, as part of its new project "Someplace Sometime" dedicated to the relationship between art and public space, is pleased to present the exhibition "Pickpocket", curated by Massimiliano Scuderi. The occasion involves 18 international artists in the reactivation of the Michetti Theater space. The project, created in collaboration with the Municipality of Pescara, is loosely inspired by a '59 film by Robert Bresson and stems from a suggestion by artist Renata Lucas. Altre intelligenze (Other Intelligencies) is a research of emerging languages in graphic design and creative work based on the experimental use of artificial intelligence, in an attempt to analyze its points of interest, advantages and criticalities. Recent developments in these technologies are rapidly changing many aspects of our lives projected toward the future, but at the same time destabilized by a sussequence of crises within society in which the condition of work is invested by a growing process of precarization. A reflection on the workings of artificial intelligence and its political implications, therefore, is useful for analyzing the framework in which the work of the contemporary designer fits, described by a crisis that manifests the need for its resemanti- zation and the search for innovative solutions for the future of practice.
Fraktur-style display font designed within an online type design workshop organized by University of Camerino (IT) and conducted by Alberto Guerra and Giulia Zafferani (Typebreak) in 2021. The typeface recontextualizes the religious imagery linked to the history of its style into a profane setting. You can see the font in use in later projects by Daniele Imani and Nicolas Poirot.
The aim of the workshop was to use the typeface as an artistic medium, in order to narrate a story of flowers. I studied the shapes of various types of flowers and synthetized few recurring visual elements into a pseudo-script. I then gave a meaning to them in written language (English) as a subtitle and assigned each one to a letter of the latin alphabet, creating a font.
